Heir Hunting - from Ancestry By Heir Line

G.M. Wilson Solicitors

Based at offices in Wakefield and Barnsley, Yorkshire, our solicitor Andrew Gallon will be dealing with the administration process swiftly and professionally once the claim has been accepted by HM Treasury Solicitor.  However, he is happy to help at any stage of the process, should you have any questions or concerns.

GM Wilson are governed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and are members of the Law Society, so they are in a position to verify our authenticity should you have any concerns.

“Heir hunting” is an unregulated industry, and most companies like to charge a fairly large percentage of the estate (it can be anything between 20 - 40%!)  We believe this is unfair, so we take a much smaller percentage.  We NEVER charge a flat fee in the event of the fee being larger than the value of the estate.

If you have been contacted by us by telephone or letter, then we believe that you are a possible beneficiary to an estate that we have been investigating.

Heir Line is a member of the Heir Hunters Association, a professional body that represents legitimate probate researchers.  Please do not hesitate to contact the association should you have any questions or concerns.

What happens next?

Along with your letter, you should have received a contract for you to sign to say that you are happy for us to  work on your behalf.  Don’t worry - you don’t have to pay us... or anyone else... anything, as our fee is paid for out of a small percentage from the estate.

Along with your signed contract, we will require two forms of identification from you, the first form being a certified copy (you can have this done by your bank manager, or a solicitor) of your passport or drivers licence, and the other form being a recent utility bill.  (If you are not in possession of any of these documents then there are alternatives we can advise you about.)

Unfortunately we are not in a position to tell you the name of the deceased person, or the value of the estate until HM Treasury Solicitor has accepted our claim.  We can then send you a copy of your family tree, showing how you are related to the deceased person.

Once HM Treasury Solicitor has reviewed and accepted our claim then our solicitor, GM Wilson, will guide you step-by-step through the administration process.

Please contact us should you require further information.

In England when a person dies without leaving a will, and no living relatives can be found, then their estate is held in trust by HM Treasury Department.  If, after a number of years, no living relative has come forward to claim the estate, then it will usually pass to the Crown.  That’s what we’re here for.  Using our genealogical and research skills we will aim to track down all the rightful beneficiaries of a deceased person’s estate.

In a lot of cases, the heirs to the estate will not have even been aware of the deceased person’s existence... they are usually distant blood relations, such as first cousins several times removed, which explains why there are so many unclaimed estates.
